Exclusive to the Atlantic Forest, the bird stands out for the colors of its plumage; shaky vocalization is discreet and does not draw much attention.
The Spotted Woodpecker veniliornis maculifrons
The 16 centimeters in length have colored tones: brown belly with white spots, greenish brown mantle with small yellow spots and yellow nape are characteristic of both sexes. What differentiates the individuals, in fact, is the top of the head, which in males is red and in females yellowish-brown.
With its short beak, the bird captures insects and larvae, a typical diet of most woodpeckers. In addition to the beak, which works as a probe in search of food, this and other species have a tongue full of barbs, useful for hooking pests that are in the depths of the galleries. This habit not only guarantees 'dinner', but also contributes to the health of the trees.
Exclusive to the Atlantic Forest – biome that covers 15% of the national territory and is considered a priority area for global conservation; the small-fronted woodpecker lives in secondary forests in the Serra do Mar, in clearings, edges of forests, plantations and capoeiras, where they usually stay in couples or even accompany mixed flocks of birds.
In the reproductive period, the bird shelters the shiny white eggs in holes excavated in the trunk and in the branches of dead trees and palm trees.
