Free, unmanned balloons that need fire to fly. In Brazil, the practice of releasing balloons is prohibited. But in a quick search on the internet it is possible to discover entire confraternities that extol the tradition.
According to the Brazilian Environmental Law, the practice can be punished with up to three years in prison and a fine. minimum of R$ 10 thousand per balloon, which is applied individually to those who manufacture, sell, transport or release balloons.
So, despite promoting it as a culture, people who maintain this dangerous tradition don't like to expose themselves. An adept of the practice, who lives in the interior of São Paulo, spoke to our reporter, but did not want to record an interview. He says that the tradition involves from religiosity to sophisticated techniques that pass from father to son.
The estimate by the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) is that 100,000 balloons are released each year in Brazil.
The states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo lead the statistics, followed by Paraná.
The problem is that if they fall in urban areas, they can set houses on fire. In wooded areas, destroy entire forests. And across the sky, cause accidents with planes or other aircraft.
The situation worsens during the June festivities, when the number of balloons in the sky increases while the vegetation is drier.
It was in August of last year, for example, that a balloon caused the fire that consumed more than half of Parque do Juquery, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo […]
The environmental police reached out to those responsible and they can pay dearly, as told by the commander of the Environmental Squad of the Military Police of São Paulo, Lieutenant Daniel Pires.
This year alone, between January and April, 48 people were arrested for releasing balloons in the state of São Paulo. The fines reached almost R$ 4 million.
But the lieutenant believes that balloon culture has met with increasing resistance.
For those who see balloons loose in the sky, the recommendation is to notify the police by calling 190.
