Species measuring about 73 centimeters displays a unique plumage. Present in the Amazon region, heron is threatened with extinction.
Considered one of the most beautiful herons of the Ardeidae family, the forest heron (
agamia agami) draws attention mainly for the color of the feathers. Unlike the more common relatives, the species has the largest number of colors on its body, ranging from blue, brown to burgundy. In addition to the unique coloring, the egret also stands out for the size of the beak, measuring up to 15 centimeters. It is not for nothing that it is known as the socó-hummingbird.
The neck is also remarkable in the species, as it is very long and thin, becoming evident only when the bird fully stretches it. The male and female have the same plumage, but the male draws more attention for having more intense colors.
A curiosity is that unlike species such as the lesser egret, the great egret and the egret, the egret does not usually walk in shallow water in open areas. On the contrary, it is not so easy to spot the species. It usually stays on the banks of Amazonian rivers, where it manages to camouflage itself. It also hides in trees and tangles of vines.
It has a solitary habit, except during the reproduction period, when it gathers in colonies, with about six nests, two meters above the water, in isolated areas of mangroves and swamps surrounded by forest. The couple is monogamous. And the female of the species lays about two eggs.
The species is threatened with extinction and occurs from the Amazon to Mato Grosso do Sul, and can also be found in neighboring countries such as Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia.
