Bartolomeu de Gusmão was a Brazilian priest. He found that air, when heated, is lighter than atmospheric air. With that, he invented the hot air balloon, but the creation was not successful. When he went to show his discovery in public, the balloon caught fire and scared everyone. Thus, the “flying priest”, as he was called at the time, was forgotten. If not for that, the story of Bartolomeu de Gusmão could have been quite different.
