On November 6, 1880 when examining the blood of a malaria patient in a military hospital Algerian Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran observed parasites moving briskly around the Red Cells. His discovery was met with skepticism by the scientific community, as it was the first time that the cause of a disease was attributed to a protozoan. Gradually, studies carried out by researchers in several countries confirmed their conclusions. In 1907, Laveran was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for the discovery of plasmodium and for his studies of the role of protozoa as agents in disease.
