Relations between masters and slaves

The work of the slaves of African origin was used in the cane fields, sugar mills, in the kitchen of the masters' houses, in the mines. There were also slaves for gain, who worked as street vendors or service providers.
Enslaved women could do the same services as men, or they worked as nannies and wet nurses, nursing and taking care of the children if their masters.

Furthermore, the captives could be hired to work for another lord.
The enslaved were also subject to physical punishment. The lords considered the punishments necessary to maintain discipline and order. This type of punishment was seen as fair and, in keeping with the mentality of the time, helped to prevent escapes and rebellions, in addition to being used as a demonstration of the lord's power over the captives.
The lashes or lashes, the use of chains, masks and iron collars, the paddle and burns with hot iron, water or hot oil were among the most commonly used punishments.
The Portuguese government itself insisted on moderating punishments so that there would be no excesses. After all, slaves were property, and if they got hurt or died as a result of the punishments, their masters would suffer financial losses. The enslaved always struggled to change the situation they were forced to accept. Many responded with escapes, suicides and destruction of property and property of their masters, among other attitudes, to punishment and oppression. These reactions demonstrated the non-acceptance of this condition.
However, the life of the enslaved was not limited to work and submission. Many of them, on their days off, worked for themselves. They were dedicated, for example, to the planting of small gardens, both for their own consumption and for sale.
The gain slaves, in turn, after fulfilling a gain quota that was passed on to their masters, could keep the amount of money that exceeded the established quota. Thus, with a lot of work, some slaves managed to save money to buy their manumission (freedom).
