NAME:
Emigrate! World of worries, uncertainties and, above all, hopes.
Emigrate! It's the farewell to the beloved homeland, to the old house with such familiar rooms, land and backyard! It is the separation of relatives, friends and neighbors and this is all linked to a great thought that says: “absolute uncertainty, concern for existence”. First, the concern for crossing the sea; then the uncertainty about the destination of the trip, of the new land known only to others. […] The man had to be strong for the match decision.
Toni Vidal Jochem
In this song, sung by German immigrants, they describe what they imagined they would find in Brazil.
[…] as everyone knows, fish are big
and if you fish even with your hand the carp that arrive
to be twenty five pounds
cockroaches look like marzipan,
each foot produces three arrobas
let's go to the land where green is eternal,
where roses bloom even in winter.
Quoted by Karl Fouquet. The German immigrant and his descendants in Brazil (1808-1824)
