For more than 30 years, the inhabitants of Carteret Atoll have stubbornly fought the Pacific Ocean. Over that time, waves and salt water attacked the vegetation and homes of the residents of these six islands belonging to Papua New Guinea – whose highest point is 1.7 meters above sea level –, making it increasingly difficult to life there. In November 2005, representatives from 150 countries gathered in Montreal (Canada) to debate the fight against global warming and rising sea levels, examined the case of Carteret and concluded: all 2600 inhabitants of the Atoll should be removed from there. The move began in May this year, with the transfer of the first five families to Bougainville, a larger island less than 100 kilometers away. By 2015, the atoll is expected to be completely submerged.
Environmental refugees are not exactly new. The frequent droughts in the Northeast, for example, served as a strong incentive to migration, as well as the fungus and bad weather. that destroyed agricultural production in Ireland in the 19th century, causing an estimated 1.5 million inhabitants to leave the country. parents. However, the situation has never been as complex as in recent years. Sea level rise, flooding and desertification related to global warming could drive millions of people out of their homes in the coming decades, say several experts.
