NAME:
The royal family had never come to visit Brazil since its discovery. Only in 1808, D. João decided that the Portuguese royal family and the court would have to come to Brazil.
What motivated this change was the war between the English and the French, in which Napoleon Bonaparte threatened to invade Portugal.
In this period, who governed Portugal was the Prince Regent D. João, who ruled in the name of his mother D. Maria I who was very sick.
The main event was not only the arrival of the royal family, but the transfer of the seat of government to Brazil.
The royal family was received in Salvador with much celebration. But a month later the seat of government was moved to Rio de Janeiro.
The arrival of the royal family brought the opening of ports to friendly nations as a benefit; factory installations; creation of the royal press; creation of the Bank of Brazil; the mint, the Botanical Garden, the Library and the Teatro Real, and the medical schools in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil was elevated to the United Kingdom to Portugal and Algarves, in 1815. The following year with the death of D. Maria I, D. João became king of Brazil and Portugal and received the title of D. John VI.
All Brazilians were happy with the king's stay. The Portuguese, with the withdrawal of French troops from the territory, demanded the king's return to Portugal.
In 1821 the king gave in to the demands of the Portuguese and returned to Portugal, leaving his son D. Peter as Prince Regent.
