Cape Verde is an African country made up of ten islands. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km off the African coast, and has 420,979 inhabitants (according to a July 2006 survey). Other close neighbors of the country are: Mauritania, Gambia and Guinea Bissau.
The country's capital is Praia, and its official currency is the Cape Verdean Escudo.
It belonged to Portugal until 1975, when it became independent.
Today a parliamentary republic, with a balance between the prime minister and the president of the republic.
The Legislative Power is unicameral, formed by the National Assembly, composed of 72 deputies, elected by direct vote for a term of five years.
