NAME:

Digging to China

The little friends are on the beach with the shovels and buckets.
– Let's dig a very, very deep hole! – says Giro, the giraffe.
– Sounds like fun – answers Silvia the snake, and the others agree.
After a while, they had dug a hole so deep that they could enter it without being seen.
Not even Giro, with his long neck!
“It's getting hard to shovel the sand out,” says Giro.
– What if we filled the buckets with sand and went from one to the other? – Silvia suggests.

This works fine. The excavation continues. Now there is water at the bottom of the hole.
Mr. Ptero, the variety store owner, goes for a walk. He looks into the hole.
– You know, if you keep digging like that, you'll make it to China! – he says, joking – Can you speak Chinese?
Friends stop working.
- I do not. - Answers Silvia, frowning - Is it serious? - she asks.
– Well, of course it is! - Answers Mr. Ptero.
– What if some kids in China are digging right now? – Silvia asks.
“So we'll have some visitors for a while,” Mr. Ptero replies and walks away.
Was he serious? Friends are not sure.
– We better learn Chinese! - Silvia laughs.
