Lord of unique armor, the armadillo, like others of its kind, is a survivor. Hunted indiscriminately by man for its meat, in some parts of Brazil the rate of population growth is even compromised. This mammal is among the 10 most seized species by IBAMA in the country.
Although he has a keen sense of smell, he cannot see or hear well. Thus, it becomes easy prey. It has a unique characteristic, which distinguishes it from the others: the female always has four (or five) offspring of the same sex. The scientific name for this phenomenon is polyembryony.
Physically, in addition to the traditional carapace, it has an elongated head, small eyes, large ears and a long tail. Good swimmer, crosses shallow water courses without breathing, simply walking on the bottom of the bed. When the river is wide, he doesn't blink: he fills his lungs with full force and swims half-immersed.
It is, on average, 60 to 100 centimeters long, with a weight that varies from 3 to 10 kilograms. It is dark brown on the back and slightly yellowish on the belly. It usually builds its den close to trees and bushes, cleverly with multiple entrances. On the other hand, during the rainy season, he suffers from mud and the complete flooding of his “house”.
Their lifestyle habits also vary well. In summer, it can be said, it is most active at twilight. In winter, it prefers the day (even for sunbathing). Just to finish, the popular name “tatu” derives from Tupi. The syllable “ta” means “hard” and “tu” refers to “thick”.
