Developed over a hundred years ago, the BCG vaccine is an important ally in protecting against tuberculosis
Since the 1970s, children born in Brazil have been routinely and free of charge against tuberculosis. You may not even remember, but you probably have the record on your arm! After all, the BCG vaccine almost always leaves a scar where it was given. Thanks to vaccination, severe forms of tuberculosis have become less and less frequent.
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that is transmitted through the air, that is, through coughing, sneezing or talking. It mainly affects the lungs, but it can also affect other organs such as kidneys, bones and the membranes that surround the brain (meninges). Meningitis caused by tuberculosis and tuberculosis that spreads throughout the body (called disseminated or miliary) are considered serious forms of the disease.
It is one of the oldest diseases in the world. Everything indicates that tuberculosis has been with us for more than two thousand years. Prehistoric human fossils dated to 8000 BC. Ç. found in Germany revealed signs of their presence. However, it was only in the 19th century that the main disease-causing microorganism was discovered. In 1882, scientist Robert Koch discovered the Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacterium is also known as Koch's bacillus. Other species of bacteria also cause tuberculosis, but less frequently.
Each year, the world records about 10 million new cases of tuberculosis. Deaths exceed one million. Brazil is among the countries with the most cases of the disease. In 2021, the country recorded more than 68,000 new cases.
