First the sky gets really dark and it starts to rain. Then comes a very strong flash, followed by a huge noise. And we take the biggest fright! The name of this powerful and sometimes frightening phenomenon is lightning. The beam is born in large, dark clouds that have a smooth underside. They are known as cumulus nimbus and are quite tall, between 2 and 18 kilometers off the ground. When they are filled with water droplets and small pieces of ice, big storms fall. With the wind the ice stones hit each other. This agitation creates particles of electricity in the cloud.
