Light event was recorded in the mining city of Brazópolis
The cameras of the Pico dos Dias Observatory, in the Minas Gerais city of Brazópolis, recorded a bright meteor on the night of this Monday (4), at 11:37 pm. The observatory's coordinator, Saulo Gargaglioni, explains that these events are common, but recording them clearly is difficult. The equipment used in this record, for example, captures every 30 seconds, and was able to focus on the exact moment the fragment entered the atmosphere.
Gargaglioni points out that bright effects, with the entry of fragments into the atmosphere, occur daily, but are not recorded if the entry is during the day or in isolated regions. Light pollution, which is poorly planned artificial lighting in cities, also compromises the record that can be made of stars and meteors.
One of the cameras that took the photo is the allsky model, because it manages to capture the entire sky with a fisheye lens. “The image of these cameras combined with the image of other cameras of the meteor monitoring program of the Exoss network, in partnership with the Laboratory National Institute of Astrophysics (LNA), can determine the trajectory, height, speed and the possible location where this meteor may fall”, explains the coordinator.
Gargaglioni highlights that the LNA will install new cameras that will improve “the coverage of meteor monitoring for a more accurate analysis of the data collected from these objects”.
According to the observatory, a meteor is a luminous event that occurs when a fragment that comes from space passes through the Earth's atmosphere and disintegrates during the passage, causing the glow seen in the sky during the night. Bright meteors, like the one photographed, are called bolides. Fragments that are collected from the Earth's soil are called meteorites.
