Our largest palm lives singly or in communities (veredas) that require an abundant supply of water in the soil. Hence, it is a sure indication that where they occur there is a watercourse. The waters carry and scatter their seeds.
The yellow pulp covers the hard oval seed and edible almond. From its fruits, liqueurs, edible and medicinal oil (for burns and healing), ice creams, creams, jellies are produced, with a high concentration of vitamins A and C.
Like most palm trees, it also provides fibers for the production of basketry crafts or house coverings. For wildlife, palm trees are essential. There are times when its fruits are the only food source available to birds, bats, primates and rodents. Palm trees also host insects and other animals inside the leaf sheaths, creating comfortable nests.
