fossil cockroaches

The oldest fossil of one of these insects is more than 300 million years old. This means that, in addition to being much older than humans, cockroaches are older than dinosaurs. While these giant reptiles went extinct, cockroaches have survived to this day, and even modern insecticides are difficult to wipe out.

However, ____________ fossil cockroaches differed from current cockroaches in having long external ovipositors (an organ used by insects to lay eggs). The first fossils of today's cockroaches appeared at the beginning of the Cretaceous period.
