O Independence Day of Brazil commemorates the date on which Brazil became independent from Portugal, which took place on September 7, 1822.
Popularly known as the 7th of September, it is a National holiday, also called Fatherland Day.
On that date, Brazilians commemorate the occasion when Dom Pedro proclaimed Brazil's independence shouting "independence or death", act that became known as the Grito da Independência or Grito do Ipiranga, because it was given on the banks of the Ipiranga stream, in São Paul.
Before the shout, Dom Pedro ordered the soldiers who accompanied him to remove the Portuguese symbols that they wore on their uniforms. From that moment, symbolically, Brazil became independent.
