Scientists at Ohio University in the United States have discovered the oldest insect farming fossil preserved for 25 million years in termite mounds in Tanzania, west Africa. The results were published this Thursday (23) in the scientific journal PLoS One.
Termites made fungal gardens in underground nests to convert the material into a more easily digestible food source.
Before the discovery of this fossil, researchers had already analyzed the DNA of current termites and estimated that the species' agriculture existed from 25 to 30 million years ago.
The evidence found in Tanzania confirmed this other finding and should allow scientists to have more precision in the date and how the symbiotic relationship between termites and fungi occurred.
The origin of this behavior likely had a profound effect on how the nutrients were landscape, influencing the evolution of Africa's biota, said study co-author Nancy Stevens.
