NAME:
Read:
The patative (Sporophila plumbea) is a species of papaya grass that has two populations in Brazil.
It is considered a discreet bird, both male and female, even though the couple is different from each other. As in the vast majority of cases of the species of the genus Sporophila, the female of the patativa is brown. The partner, on the other hand, has a predominantly gray look, with some parts of the body in lighter tones.
It has two relatives that are also called “patativa”, such as the chorão, still known as patativa-chorona, and also the patativa-tropeira. The whiting differs visually from the “common” patativa by having a yellow beak and part of the belly region in a whitish tone, being similar only to the juvenile of the mentioned species. The main visual difference in the Patativa-tropeira is the color of the beak, which, as in the willow, is also yellow. The plumage is predominantly gray, making it very similar to the patativa.
In addition to the visual aspect, it is possible to identify each of these species by vocalization. A curiosity is that, in Tupi, “patativa” means “person who talks a lot”. You can understand the reason for this name when you listen to the song of the species, which is surprising for its complexity.
