A hospital to care for elephants opened in the northern Indian city of Mathura in November. The site offers more than a thousand square meters – the equivalent of a futsal court – adapted to receive injured, sick or elderly animals. The initiative is a partnership between the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Wildlife SOS and the forestry department of the state government of Uttar Pradesh.
The facilities have wireless digital x-ray – which allows the device to be taken to the animal –, laser devices, hydrotherapy area – water treatment –, equipment that perform ultrasounds, methods to reassure elephants and quarantine areas – where animals with contagious diseases can stay until to heal.
The place attracts tourists, who can follow the exams and film the elephants. The project also intends to offer courses on animal care to bring together those interested in the subject.
The hospital was built next to an elephant care and conservation center maintained by the NGO, which houses about 20 animals rescued from illegal captures and from circuses where they were mistreated.
Elephants are seen as a cultural and religious symbol in India, with about 60% of these animals in Asia being from that country. They are featured in processions and festivals, as well as being displayed as attractions in tourist spots.
However, many elephants are mistreated by their caretakers, according to animal rights activists. According to the country's government, the number of Indian elephants decreased from 31,000 in 2012 to 27,000 in 2017, which may have been caused by these mistreatments.
