Read this fragment of the novel

"St Bernard":

Windows are closed. Midnight. No rumors in the deserted house. I get up, look for a candle, the light will go out. I'm not sleepy. Lying down, rolling on the mattress until dawn is torture. I prefer to sit and finish this. Tomorrow I will have nothing to entertain myself. I put the candle in the candlestick, strike a match and light it, I feel a shiver. The memory of Magdalene haunts me. I try to push her away and walk around the table. I clench my hand in such a way that my nails hurt, and when I fall to myself I'm biting my lips to the point of drawing blood.
