Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós

Born in 1941, in the interior of Minas Gerais. In the 1960s, he moved to Belo Horizonte. With a background in the areas of education and art, he went to France, with a UN scholarship, to study philosophy at the Pedagogical Institute in Paris. It was in the French capital that he started writing.

In the early 1970s, he made his literary debut with The fish and the bird, the first book of an extensive work that established him among one of the main authors of children's and youth fiction in Brazil. He was the founder of the Movement for a Literary Brazil, in which he actively participated.

He received important decorations, such as Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France), White Rose Medal (Cuba), Great Medal of Inconfidência Mineira and Santos Dumont Medal. He also won the Critics' Grand Prize in Children's / Youth Literature by APCA, the Jabuti, the Brazilian Academy of Letters Award, among many others.

In 2000, he entered the IBBY Honor Roll. In 2008, he received the Ibero-American Prize for Children's Literature, from the SM Foundation, in Mexico, for his body of work. A lover of words, he said he had the breath of a cat, which allowed him to be born and die several times. “I am fragile enough for a word to hurt me, as I am strong enough for a word to resurrect me.” Bartholomew passed away in 2012.
