Both protect our bodies from foreign substances, but they are used at different times. Vaccines are made from substances that stimulate the production of antibodies _________ to a certain disease – this will prevent contagion after vaccination. The serum, on the other hand, is made in the body of another living being – normally, a large mammal, such as a horse. The antibodies that the animal produced are removed to create the serum, which is often used to treat the bites of venomous animals such as snakes and spiders. So, unlike the vaccine, the serum does not prevent disease – it serves as a cure.
