Anteaters are normally slow-moving, but when pursued they can gallop away. The famous anteater hug is practically the only defense of this clumsy animal with very limited sight and hearing. The best warning system is the sense of smell, which is extremely accurate. When sensing danger, it makes use of extra articulations and lifts its front legs, supporting its weight on a tripod formed by the two hind legs and the tail.
