Throughout his nearly fifty years of diplomatic career João Cabral de Melo Neto has lived in countries such as Spain, England, Senegal, Ecuador and Honduras. The culture and landscape of these places marked his poetry in an expressive way. Seville was perhaps the city most sung about by the poet, but it was by no means the only one. In Ecuador, the fascination with nature and the Indians of the Andes produced gems such as “The corridor of volcanoes” and “The Indian of the Cordillera”. Intertwined with these poems, Inez Cabral's memoirs reveal to the reader everyday aspects of João's life: his habits, opinions and tastes.
