A famous fashion photographer, Dick Avery, works for Quality Magazine, a highly regarded women's magazine. He complies with the determinations of the magazine's editor, Maggie Prescott, who is not satisfied with the latest results and tries to find a "new face". Dick finds him in Jo Stockton, a clerk at a bookstore in Greenwich Village where a photo shoot had recently taken place. After some resistance, Maggie accepts Jo as the model that will go to Paris to photograph and be the symbol of Quality. Jo only agrees because there she can meet Emile Flostre, an intellectual whose ideas she idolizes. However, when they arrive in Paris, things don't go as planned.
