In the remnants of the Atlantic Forest, the black lion tamarin only occurs in the west of São Paulo and was considered extinct for many years.
The situation of its population is still serious, as the species appears on the red list of endangered species. Within the next three generations – from 2019 to 2040 – a population reduction of 50% or more is estimated due to habitat loss and unexpected events such as yellow fever outbreaks.
The black lion tamarin is considered an ally of human health, playing the role of “sentinel” in the cycle of yellow fever. When infected, it alerts to the appearance of the disease in a region, allowing the establishment of preventive public policies. The species is also a good seed disperser, helping to maintain the forests where they live.
