In appearance, this bird resembles a heron or savannah. The difference is that the print has an extremely wide and flat beak, resembling a boat with a high keel turned upside down.
To feed, it usually looks for places with gravel, shallow waters of surf or mudflats. But it is a little seen species due to the fact that it is more active at night, when it goes out fishing.
During the day, it usually stays in the trees, resting in groups of the same species. It lives alone or in pairs. As it always keeps its beak lowered over its chest, it appears to be meditating. When sleeping, it places its beak under its wing until it disappears completely.
