Biggest otter in the world

Considered the largest otter in the world, the giant otter is an endemic species in South America, but is in decline in many countries. “In Uruguay, the species is already considered extinct. In Argentina, it is critically endangered”, tells ((o))eco Caroline Leuchtenberger, Global Mammal Coordinator at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) English).

In Brazil, the mammal occurs in the Amazon, in the Cerrado, in the Atlantic Forest and in the Pantanal, with the Paraguay River – the main source of the biome – being one of its typical areas of occurrence. “Ninety percent of their diet is made up of fish, eventually, especially in situations of lack of resources, they end up consuming fish. other types of prey, such as alligators, and other vertebrates as well,” adds the specialist, who also chairs the Ariranhas Project in Brazil.

Social animals, they live in groups always formed by a couple, being the only individuals that reproduce within the group, says the coordinator. She explains that, in this way, the group increases in size with the permanence of puppies of different ages.

“But in addition to family groups, there are also groups that are randomly formed with no kinship. The family group format is the most common”, he comments.
