Expert guarantees that creativity is not just something for genius
What would you do if you knew you wouldn't fail? “Nothing,” according to University of Minnesota graphic design professor Brad Hokanson. That's because, for him, there's no fun in the absence of challenge. And that's exactly what improves our creativity. In this month's edition of Galileo (nº280), Professor Hokanson - who teaches the course “Creative Solution of Problems, available on the Coursera website — explains how this skill can be acquired by any. Read our chat with him, in full:
GALILEO: Is creativity for everyone?
Some research shows that creativity is part of mental abilities. Everyone uses it when solving problems we encounter on a daily basis. We just don't recognize it as creativity. We shouldn't think we're not creative just because we're not making art or inventing something like Einstein. We're actually quite inventive and creative about a lot of things. Therefore, we must recognize creativity and work on it. Everyone can do it. Creativity is acquired with practice.
In a way, to be creative you have to challenge some standards. Do you think people are afraid to be creative because of that?
Think. One of the characteristics of creativity is that it differs from normal, routine. In other words, we have to be brave to propose new things, whether wearing different socks or eating in an unusual way. Sometimes we feel limited by society, whether co-workers with strict rules or a family very traditional, but everyone should be open to solving problems differently within their own context.
People think creativity is something linked to the arts, only musicians, painters and designers can be creative. Why is it wrong to think like that?
Artists, designers and musicians are lucky to have a life surrounded by creativity. But I think people make mistakes in isolating creativity in certain fields and not incorporating it into life. My father was a bricklayer, he was very good at inventing and fixing things. Despite finding him creative, he never thought of himself that way. It wasn't art, but he was solving problems and making things up.
Lack of creativity is associated with a more limited worldview. How can people get rid of this kind of vision?
One of the ways to increase our creative potential is to expose ourselves to different environments, things and people. Some research shows that our memories and experiences in different places can help us solve the problems where we live. People may have limited views in their work environments, for example, but they can change things by making sure they've reached the limits there.
