Species that is known as ricebird occurs from French Guiana to Rio Grande do Sul. feeds on seeds.
The garibaldi (Chrysomus ruficapilus) belongs to the Icteridae family and measures up to 17.5 centimeters.
When young, its head and crop are rusty with brown. The body is mixed between pale yellow and black. In the female, the plumage is olive-brown in color, with the belly and upper side streaked with black and light brown. The throat is yellowish. The male, on the other hand, is black in contrast to the matte red crown, throat and breast.
It is confused with the black tie, the black bird and the chopim, as from afar it appears to be entirely black.
It feeds on seeds, fruits and small insects. It is also known as do-ré-mi and rice bird.
The garibaldi often sings during flight and planes wings and tails outstretched when landing.
The song is formed by a sequence of whistles, followed by a very long trill.
The nest is built in the shape of a basket and is made with wool. Usually, they nest in forks of swamps, trees or palm trees. The female lays two to three eggs in shades of blue with dark spots. Incubation lasts about 14 days. The bird breeds in spring and summer.
It occurs in almost all of Brazil and can be found from French Guiana to Rio Grande do Sul. It is common to be seen in rice and corn plantations.
