Some spots are difficult to identify. If a blouse or shorts is dirty and there's no way of knowing if it's chocolate or dulce de leche, no one spends a lot of time trying to find out and will wash those clothes right away. Right?
But if the question is whether a stain is blood, the situation gets more complicated. Even more so if this is important in the investigation of a crime. Over time, the blood darkens and can even look like a chocolate stain. To find out what it is, just resorting to science.
There are some chemicals that can tell if a stain is blood or not. One such product is called phenolphthalein, a pH indicator. It reacts when in contact with substances of a basic character – such as blood, which is slightly basic – and turns a pink color. But if the substance is acidic or neutral, nothing happens.
Therefore, phenolphthalein does not only react with blood, but with any substance with a basic pH, such as washing powder, for example. To increase accuracy, the blood identification test – known as the Kastle-Meyer test – also has hydrogen peroxide in its composition. […]
