The district of Amarantina is located about 30 km from Ouro Preto. The village would have emerged after a great famine that affected the population of Vila Rica, around the year 1700. Thus, many people settled in the place to grow food and distribute it in the region. According to oral tradition, there were many plantations of garlic, fruits and vegetables. At that time, the town was named Tijuco, which encompassed the region where Amarantina and Cachoeira do Campo are today.
