Some coconut caterpillars do not complete their life cycle and die before becoming a butterfly. However, as long as this does not happen by human action, it is something commonplace in nature. “These caterpillars are important sources of food for birds, possums, monkeys, lizards, for all urban fauna. So killing these caterpillars is actually taking food from these animals. This is critical for birds, as the caterpillars appear around the time the birds are raising their young. The thrush, for example, is breeding now and these caterpillars are important food sources for them.”, emphasizes André Freitas, professor at the Laboratory of Ecology and Systematics of Butterflies at the Unicamp.
