The colorful flags that decorate June festivals do not always carry a religious sense. They arose as a way, according to Catholic tradition, to bless the festival and party-goers. This is because they had the image of saints of the religion and were washed in water that would serve for protection.
Even the non-religious celebrations in June have the custom of hanging flags, maintaining the idea of protecting the people who are celebrating.
But not every place in the world uses little flags in the decoration of June parties. In Portugal, for example, the most common is to decorate these parties with ribbons and colored lamps.
