A very common species of turtle in the Amazon, the tracajá is a reptile that lives between 60 and 90 years in its habitat. The problem is that it is part of the daily menu of riverside populations and, for this very reason, is very targeted by illegal trade.
As an adult, it reaches 45 cm in length, with about 8 kg in weight. An easy target, the tracajá is usually hunted during spawning, when it is on dry land, a time when its movements are slower.
Although it chooses the bank of rivers and lakes to reproduce, this tactic does not always work. Their young are almost always threatened by jaguars, birds and even some carnivorous fish.
