Considered one of the largest neotropical primates, the red howler monkey can measure up to 58 cm and weigh up to 7 kg. The prehensile tail is longer than the body and can reach 67 centimeters.
Accustomed to living in groups of up to eight individuals led by the strongest and most robust male, the primate feeds on leaves, fruits and flowers and can live in an area of 10 to 20 hectares.
The male has a bright reddish coat, with golden reflections, hence the origin of the popular name “red howler monkey”. The female has dark brown hair, almost black.
