When many bats feed on insects, they control populations of crop pests such as corn and sugar cane. A survey, carried out in Brasilia, pointed out that the presence of bats saves 390 million dollars in Brazilian corn production. Although bats generally carry a bad reputation, they provide a fundamental service to agriculture.
In addition, work carried out in Ilhéus proved that the presence of these little bats helps in increasing the production of cocoa beans, precisely because these animals keep pests at bay.
