Anyone who thinks that there are only stars in the sky, in the sea or in the movies, is wrong! In the forest – more precisely in the Atlantic Forest – it is also possible to find stars, but of the feathered type: we are talking about the star flycatcher!
The name “birdie” applies to this bird – it is less than 10 centimeters long! And although he is less famous, the star flycatcher is as handsome as any movie heartthrob. It has a reddish-brown head, green back, gray chest and white belly. One of its main features is the scissor-shaped tail, with black and white tips, which is why some people call it “scissors”.
The star flycatcher is an endemic species of the Atlantic Forest, that is, it can only be found in this ecosystem. Its habitat is mountainous areas of well-preserved forests with the presence of bamboo (a type of hollow stem vegetation with spaced leaves) in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Bahia.
The bird lives deep in the middle of the bamboo and, being small, it goes easily unnoticed by those who do not know its song, a quick sequence of metallic-like sounds. As it is a very difficult species to be found and observed, ornithologists (a bird specialist) know very little about its habits. To give you an idea, until today, no one was even lucky enough to find their nest.
family member Tyrannidae – which also includes birds such as the famous bem-te-vi –, the star flycatcher, as well as other tyranids, and as its name says, has insects as its main food. And this bird often captures its meal skillfully in mid-flight.
Due to the destruction of most of the Atlantic Forest, the star flycatcher, as well as several other species that depend on this ecosystem, is seriously threatened with extinction. The continued destruction of forests could make this tiny star in the Atlantic Forest go out forever.
