Hummingbird stands out for its iridescent feathers; “Polytmus guainumbi” mixes Greek and indigenous terms.
Small, only 10 centimeters long, the curve-billed hummingbird (Polytmus guainumbi) stands out not only for the characteristic of the beak – the main tool for securing food –, but also for the colors of the plumage that mix shades of gold and bright green.
Found in Brazil, the species also occurs in Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina. Known as “campestre”, it inhabits clean fields, dirty fields, cerrados, restingas and swamps.
With solitary habits, it looks for food close to the ground. After all, the menu goes beyond the nectar of flowers: the curved-billed hummingbird captures insects and spiders.
In the reproductive period, which in Brazil occurs between October and March, the hummingbird builds its nest in forks of branches of small bushes, about one meter high. Cone-shaped, the structure decorated with lichens and seeds receives two eggs, hatched by the female after 15 days of incubation.
The cozy house accommodates the chicks for about 20 days, when, then, they conquer freedom and enchant birdwatchers, who, sometimes, guarantee special sightings.
