Reality with a lot of fantasy
Born in 1937, Moacyr Scliar, from Rio Grande do Sul, is a versatile man: a doctor and writer, equally active in both areas. Owner of an extensive literary work, he is also a handfull biographer and assiduous contributor to several Brazilian newspapers. His books for young people and adults are successful with the public and critics and some have already been published abroad.
Very attentive to extreme situations that dislike human life, Scliar combines in his texts evidence of a very concrete reality with absolutely fantastic scenes. The coexistence between realism and fantasy is harmonious and from it are born the surprising outcomes of the stories.
In his work, questions of Jewish identity, the daily life of medicine and the world of the media are frequent, as, for example, in the short story “The day we killed James Cagney”.
