Characterized by its long and thin beak, the snail hawk (Rostrhamus sociabilis) specializes in removing the muscle of large water snails from their shells. When food is scarce, the hawk opts for crabs.
By behavior, it occurs in humid areas, such as marshes, swamps, flooded fields and rivers. The bird spreads throughout America, from the United States to Uruguay, passing through the entire Brazilian territory.
It measures between 39 and 48 centimeters and has a wingspan of up to 1.15 meters. Nests are flimsy platforms built into trees over water.
