It measures up to 1.5 m (from snout to tail) and weighs up to 60 kg. It has a hard and resistant carapace, which covers a good part of the body and few hairs. Its front paws are equipped with large and powerful claws, which help it to dig huge holes, with the central nail reaching 20 cm. It has no teeth, and its main defense is its giant claws. Giant armadillos are considered ecosystem engineers, as they modify the landscape with their huge holes, allowing them to other species, such as the crab-eating fox, the ocelot, the lesser anteater, among others, use their burrows after they have abandon.
