With about 19 centimeters, the blood-tiê is recognized for the beauty of the red plumage, a unique characteristic of the males, acquired after the second year of life.
By presenting sexual dimorphism, when male and female individuals have different physical characteristics, the females of the species are less showy, with brown and reddish-brown plumage, similar in appearance to the immature male.
The bright red tone of the representatives served as inspiration for the “baptism” of the bird, which is also known as blood-of-ox and fire-tiê.
Even if it is beautiful, the tiê would not join the “chorus” of the forest, since the warning vocalization is harsh and the song is a melodious warble.
Endemic to Brazil, it occurs from Paraíba to Santa Catarina, where it inhabits low capoeiras, forest edges, sandbanks, plantations and even parks and city squares.
Accustomed to living in pairs, it frequents feeders and rarely gathers in small groups.
In the reproductive period, which occurs in summer, the blood-tiê builds a basket-shaped nest where it lays two or three eggs. After being incubated for 13 days, the young are born and, unlike the habit of some species, are fed by several individuals, including males.
