Exactly 130 years ago, Anna Lins of Guimarães Peixoto Bretas was born, better known as Cora Coralina. Raised in the old Vila Boa de Goyaz, Cora wrote her verses about the hardships and faith in life.
She was a Brazilian poet and short-story writer, but before that she worked as a confectioner. She started writing at the age of 14, but her first book was not published until she was 75.
In all, there were three books published, including recipe texts, cordel, and accounts of the city.
Cora died in September 1985, but to this day she is one of the most important female voices in national literature.
After her death, friends and relatives created the Associação Casa da Cora, to maintain the Casa de Cora Coralina Museum, which was inaugurated on the same day as her birthday.
The museum's director, Marlene Velasco, said that the city started to be festive and had a special program, with a 130 km horseback ride, thanksgiving mass and 200 kilos of cake.
She mentioned that the year of Cora Coralina began this Tuesday, throughout the state of Goiás. The poetess will be remembered with theatre, music, book launches and poetry contests.
Correios also launched a commemorative stamp in honor of the poet's 130th birthday.
