A reflection of the European crisis or the economic moment that Brazil is going through? Or both? Although experts are not categorical in explaining the reasons for the fluctuations in the book market worldwide, at the end of 2011, Brazilians spent R$7.18 billion buying books and publications, according to the Ibope. While in Portugal, during the first half of 2011, the Portuguese bought fewer books than in the same period in 2010. The fall in Portuguese book consumption was 3%, a much smaller decline than in other areas, […]. Until June 2011, the Portuguese spent 168 million and, in 2008, 156 million. However, these numbers are inconclusive. The difference in criteria between the surveys here and overseas does not allow us to draw many conclusions about the dynamics of these markets. Even so, such statistical discrepancies reflect the moment that the economies of these countries are going through, and indicate changes regarding the consumption of cultural goods.
