There once was a prince who never laughed. His parents, the King and Queen, were merry people, and so they were quite dismayed that they never heard their son laugh. They invited clowns of great reputation to entertain the prince, but none of them could get a laugh from the serious prince.
Then one day a princess came to her kingdom in a white carriage. She was a cheerful young woman and everyone expected her to be able to make the prince laugh. However, she didn't even try!
“If the prince wants to be serious, then let him be. Laughter cannot be forced! Laughter must come from the heart! - she said.
And so, during her visit, she was as serious as he was. No smile crossed his face. This greatly puzzled the young prince. He was so used to being surrounded by happy people trying to make him laugh that the sight of her serious face put him off. He couldn't help it, so he tried to make her laugh! He started smiling and telling her jokes. And he found his own jokes so funny, he burst out laughing! The princess smiled at him and joined in the laughter.
The king and queen had never heard a sweeter sound!
