Despite lacking a backbone, octopuses have a highly developed nervous system. They are considered the most intelligent invertebrates on the planet. It has already been proven, through experiments in which octopuses solve problems, that they have short- and long-term memory. When placed in a maze, an octopus learns the way on the first try and then makes a beeline for the exit.
Furthermore, octopuses can use simple tools and even open closed jars. It is not known, however, if all this sagacity is in fact learned individually or simply the result of animal instinct.
