Fish are the largest class of vertebrates on the planet, and they have been around for many years. In fact, 45 million years ago! We can find them in seas, oceans, rivers and lakes. There are all sizes. With 1 centimeter, but also with 18 meters. As they swim very fast and have a soft cover, they managed to survive for many years. The respiratory system of fish has: mouth; gills or gills; opercular slit and opercula (almost all fish have them). […]
Humans breathe through their lungs. But this does not happen with fish: they breathe through gills or gills. They facilitate the so-called aquatic breathing. The water enters through the mouth of the fish and goes to the gills. There, the blood receives oxygen. It then expels carbon dioxide through the opercula, which are actually the holes on each side of the fish's head. As you can see, they never swallow sea water!
In the body of fish, there is something that we also have: blood vessels. These vessels will help oxygen pass into the blood. This is very important for all living beings. But there are also fish that do not have opercula, such as sharks and rays. However, animals such as crustaceans (crabs and shrimp) and molluscs (mussels and oysters) also use this type of respiration. What happens in fish gills is similar to what happens in human lungs: the water that the operculum throws out has less oxygen and more carbon dioxide than that which goes into. Which makes sense, because oxygen is essential for all living things. Without it, no animal could survive in good conditions.
